What Is Honda Sensing?

Honda Sensing is a suite of driver-assistive technologies that can alert you to things you might miss while driving and may even help you avoid a collision or lessen its severity.

Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR)

This feature recognizes and remembers road signs your vehicle passes. If you pass a speed limit sign, the speed limit will be displayed on or near your speedometer and above your current vehicle speed on the head-up display.

Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS)

This feature will help keep you in the middle of your lane. If you begin to leave the center of a detected lane without signaling, the steering will adjust to keep you centered.

Road Departure Mitigation (RDM)

If your vehicle begins to drift too close to the side of the road and you have not activated a turn signal, RDM will alert you via the steering wheel vibrating.

If you continue to leave the road, RDM can apply steering torque and braking, which can keep your vehicle in a detected lane. (*note- this is applicable when driving 45-90 mph)

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)

Keeping a constant speed and a safe distance between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead of you is the job of ACC, removing your need to keep your foot on the brake pedal or accelerator.

Forward Collision Warning (FCW)

FCW uses a small camera, mounted at the top of the front windshield, to detect the presence of vehicles in front of you. If it is determined a collision is possible with yourself and another vehicle, FCW will alert you with audio and visual alerts.

Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS)

CMBS will automatically apply brake pressure if you fail to respond to Forward Collision Warning. If a collision with a vehicle in front of you is determined to be unavoidable, the CMBS will bring your vehicle to a stop.

Does Honda Sensing really help minimize accidents?

While Honda Sensing can never replace a human driver’s attention and skill, it can help drivers stay more aware of changing or challenging traffic conditions.

Can you add Honda Sensing to a vehicle?

It is not possible to add Honda Sensing to a vehicle that does not come with it installed. Honda Sensing is installed while a vehicle is assembled at the factory. This is because Honda Sensing includes radar installation, steering wheel controls, and a variety of other features, sensors, and buttons.

This is all easier to do when the engine hasn’t been inserted into the vehicle yet.

Can Honda Sensing be disabled?

There are some features of Honda Sensing that can be disabled or customized:

  • Road Departure Mitigation, Lane Keeping Assist System, and Adaptive Cruise Control can be switched off with the touch of a button.
  • The sensitivity of certain features can be customized through settings.

Examples of this include reducing the following distance in Forward Collision Warning or changing alerts for Adaptive Cruise Control.

Both features can be adjusted through a touchscreen menu.

Is Honda Sensing available on all models of vehicles?

Honda Sensing safety suite is available or standard on most new Honda vehicles, and is one of the 3 things you NEED to know bout the Honda Fit.
